Nail Surgery

Nail surgery performed by a Foot Specialist is a specialised procedure aimed at treating persistent or severe toenail issues, most commonly ingrown toenails. This minor surgical intervention is typically considered when other conservative treatments have failed or when the toenail condition is recurrent and significantly affecting the patient’s comfort and mobility. Nail surgery is a safe and effective way to address problems with the toenail, preventing further complications and providing long-term relief from pain and discomfort.

What a Foot Specialist Does During Nail Surgery

Nail surgery generally involves the partial or complete removal of the toenail or a section of the nail bed. The most common procedures include:

Partial Nail Avulsion:

This is the most frequently performed nail surgery, particularly for ingrown toenails. The Foot Specialist removes the side of the nail that is growing into the skin, along with a small portion of the nail bed. This procedure is usually done under local anaesthetic to numb the toe, ensuring the patient is comfortable throughout. After the problematic portion of the nail is removed, a chemical (often phenol) is applied to the nail bed to prevent that part of the nail from regrowing. This method significantly reduces the risk of recurrence.

Total Nail Avulsion:

In cases where the entire nail is diseased, thickened, or repeatedly ingrown, the Foot Specialist may opt to remove the entire toenail. Like partial nail avulsion, this procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. Once the nail is removed, the nail bed is treated to prevent regrowth, or, in some cases, allowed to regrow if a healthy nail is expected to return.

Matrixectomy:

This involves the removal of the nail matrix, the tissue under the nail that produces the nail. This is often done to permanently prevent the nail from regrowing, which is particularly useful for chronic or severe cases.

How Nail Surgery Prevents Foot Issues

Nail surgery by a Foot Specialist is highly effective in preventing further foot issues related to problematic toenails. By removing the part of the nail that causes pain or recurrent ingrowth, the procedure alleviates the immediate discomfort and prevents future occurrences of the condition. This is especially important for patients who suffer from repeated ingrown toenails, which can lead to infections and more serious complications if left untreated.

Additionally, by eliminating the source of irritation and potential infection, nail surgery helps maintain overall foot health, which is crucial for individuals with conditions such as diabetes or poor circulation, who are at greater risk of complications from foot issues. The use of antiseptic and sterile techniques during the procedure also minimises the risk of post-surgical infections, ensuring a smooth recovery.

Preventative measures provided by the Foot Specialist post-surgery, such as advice on proper nail care and footwear, further reduce the likelihood of developing similar issues in the future. Patients who undergo nail surgery often experience significant relief from pain and are able to return to their normal activities without the limitations imposed by chronic toenail problems.
